Research a HBSE topic of their choice and are required to write
a paper that explains their HBSE topic.
Overview of the Problem
1. Provide background information about your HBSE topic (i.e. an
issue relevant to the life stages: childhood, adolescence, middle
adulthood, later adulthood).
2. How did the problem originate? Why is it a problem? Use
statistical data to support your background information (i.e. Fifty
percent of the population has experienced this issue; Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2020)
3. How does it impact the area (i.e. Clarksville, Nashville, Tennessee)
that you selected? (1 page)
Disparities
1. Illustrate disparities between groups or explain who is being
negatively impacted by the problem? Who benefits?
2. How does the problem impact individuals, groups, communities,
organizations, social work vulnerable populations, etc.
3. Explain the inequity, if one exists, or explain the major concern of
the individuals most affected by your topic. (1 page)

Based on your findings, explain the community needs (1/2 page)

Explain the community’s assets (1/2 page)
Social Work HBSE Concepts
1. What concepts from the text are being highlighted through your
HBSE issue (discrimination, bullying, sexual assault, elder abuse,
etc.)
2. Explain who is contributing to inequity/unfair/unjust behavior…
men, women, teens, organizations, etc.?
Cite or highlight 5 concepts (1/2 page)
Apply an Appropriate SW Theory/Code of Ethics
1. What social work theory might be helpful in explaining the
problem under investigations? (see theories handout in content)
2. Briefly explain how the macro problem under investigation relates
to an ethical principle or a social work value found in the Code of
Ethics. (1/2 page)
Policies (Local, State and Federal)
What policies (local, state, federal or international) are in place to
address the issue you are highlighting? List one policy from each
category.
1. Briefly explain dominant policies (local, federal or state), their
origin and the affect the policy has had on the issue you are
investigating. (i.e. There is one state policy in place to address
child abuse. It is specific to the state of Tennessee. It is the (XYZ)
Act and its purpose is to eliminate child abuse in the state.
2. If no policies exist, explain what policies could be created to
address the problem you are explaining. (1 page)

1. How has the social work profession responded to the issue under
investigation?
2. Cite prior HSBE examples (see NASW website: socialworkers.org)

Paper Guidelines—All students must submit a term paper
1. Papers are due in D2L on December 2, 2022
2. All papers will be graded based on the assigned rubric (see rubric
in content)
3. Paper should be a coherent and well-written paper, have
appropriate subheadings based on the headings noted above.
4. Paper should be typed in APA format, include a title page, body,
in-text citations and a reference sheet.
5. Paper should not exceed 6 typed pages.
