Learning to Manage Stress for Optimum Health
What did you learn about yourself?
One of the main things I learned about myself is I am very stressed. Although, this is normal in young adults around my age, I got a score over 300. I learned this is not good for my health and is probably why I feel so overwhelmed at times. I tend to be very hard on myself because I know I am capable of so much that sometimes I put unrealistic goals over myself and stress when those goals aren’t met.
What stressors and/or “hassle” do you recognize in your life?
One of the main stressors I recognized in myself was change in the number of arguments with my significant other. Another was change in responsibilities in work as I am now looked up to because I decided to continue my education to get a higher position. Change in schools is also one as I have decided to finish my degree after a while, and it has proven to be quite difficult. Change in my personal, social and eating habits is also attributing to my stress.
What measures can you take in order to lower your stress and optimize your health and well-being?
I can stop biting off more than I can chew. As a first-generation student it is a lot of pressure so I can be a little kinder to myself and tell myself I am doing enough. I can also take myself in self-care days and treat myself to things that may release dopamine to reduce my stress levels. I can also ask for help when I need it and not tell myself only, I can do it. Asking for help is not a bad thing.
How will this enable you to become a more productive student?
Now that I know what some of my major stressors are, I can cut off some of these things so I can do even better academically. I know in what area to be kinder to myself in and cut myself a little slack. I am doing enough, and I am good enough. In case nobody has told you, I am proud of you. I am proud of me.
