Instructions will be attached
The goal of this assignment is to a) become familiar with finding research articles in research databases, b) learn to evaluate the main hypotheses and observations in articles deemed worthy of publication in Sociological journals by scholars, and c) gain experience in citing an article using American Psychological Association (APA) formatting.
You can search for a journal article of your choice and complete the process of critical review and evaluation. Using EBSCO HOST on the Library portal you will be able to seek out Sociological journals. The article you select may be on any Sociological topic of interest to you.
Remember, articles appearing in these journals have been deemed to be of scholastic value by other sociologists and the research reported on in the article has conformed to the principles of the scientific method. Journals available include the American Journal of Sociology, American Sociological Review, Annual Review of Sociology, Contemporary Sociology, Social Problems, Social Forces, Race, Ethnicity and Education, Social Psychology Quarterly, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Gender and Society, Sociology of Sport, Sociology of Religion, Qualitative Sociology, Journal of Social Issues, and Demography.
You must use a sociological journal in selecting an article/study. When selecting an article for your review, consider the author’s credentials. That is, is the author considered legitimate to study the topic selected? The author may be an accomplished academic having done considerable research in the subject field or perhaps is a practitioner with proven hands-on experience and is respected by others in the field. (You may assume an individual would not have credentials unless approved by others in their field.)
Your review should follow the format used in questions 1-9 below. In this assignment you must submit a copy of the article you reviewed. If you are unsure of your article selection, check with the instructor either before or after class or by email. Or you may consult the Reference Librarian in the Library.
Step 1: Locate your article. To reach the databases available on the library website, after logging onto the SMCC website, go to “My Maine Guide”. Next click on “My Learning” and then the library. Next, identify the search engine you wish to use to find articles — in this case go to EBSCOHOST.
In the first box enter “Sociology”. In the second and third boxes enter topics of interest within the broad sociological areas available, e.g., deviance, marriage, ethnicity.
Step 2: Evaluate the author’s argument. After reading and assessing this article, copy the article and submit with a written review responding to the questions below. Itemize each of your responses using the corresponding number of the question to which you are responding.
