“The Old Testament dictum of “an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth” has been cited by many as divine justification for strict punishments, although some scholars believe that “an eye for an eye” was intended to reduce the barbarism of existing penalties, whereby an aggrieved party might exact the severest of punishments for only minor offenses (even petty offenses were often punished by whipping, torture, and sometimes death)” (Schmalleger,2012, p. 71).In sentencing someone with a certain punishment it should be looked at as will this type of punishment deter other from dong the same thing. It can seem like vengeance if all behavior and the person’s situation are not taken into consideration. I have to say that there are many times today that criminals do not get “just desserts” and are allowed to live rather it is behind bars but they still live when they took a life. I did a small survey in my freshman year for a final and 100 people that I asked randomly “Do you believe in the death Penalty” most said yes and that it takes too long for the action to happen.
At the time I was one that sat on the fence about this but since I work on Death Row I feel these animals and yes they are animals are wasting our tax money sitting on death row for years. I have heard that two wrongs do not make a right but where do we draw the line. Crime happens all too often and the younger generations are getting even worse. They have seen that they can do whatever they want and just get life in prison. Well they thin prison would be easier at least they would get fed and have a warm bed. How is the just desserts when this what they want? “Following their classical counterparts, modern-day advocates of general deterrence frequently stress that for punishment to be an effective impediment to crime, it must be swift, certain, and severe enough to outweigh the rewards flowing from criminal activity”.(Schmalleger, 2012, p. 71).Schmalleger, F.
