A 55-year-old male executive presents at the clinic for his regular checkup. He was diagnosed with hypertension 5 years ago and has been taking a diuretic and a β-adrenergic blocker to control his blood pressure. His blood pressure is currently being maintained at about 135/70 mm Hg. His total cholesterol level is 180 mg/dL, and his HDL cholesterol is 30 mg/dL. He is otherwise well. He is a nonsmoker. He has recently read in the media about “inflammation” and the heart and expresses concern about his risk of CHD.
