Module 1 Project Text Version Slow Reading Challenge 1-First, read “The Power of Patience (Links to an external site.)” by Jennifer L. Roberts, online. https://www.harvardmagazine.com/2013/11/the-power-of-patience 2- Next, choose 2 pages from the book. These pages should address issues relevant to our class (History of Ideas) and of interest to you. Ideally, this is a page you come back to after having read the whole book. Before you start the work below, ensure you know the meaning of all the words on the page. • Section 1: Choose one page from Bellamy’s Looking Backward, Chapter I – Chapter XIII • Section 2: Choose one page from Bellamy’s Looking Backward, Chapter XIII – Chapter XXVIII • Write down the starting time of your “slow reading” as well as the finish time (thirty minutes later) when you’ll be done. • Reflect Intentionally: o Jot down brief observations on what you notice as time goes by. Read, think, read, reflect, read, scrutinize, change positions, read aloud, observe patterns, make connections, and let the passage unfold for you. o Focus on a single word or phrase; step back and reread the entire passage in one go. o Associate: allow yourself to be reminded of other texts and experiences. Read, read slowly, Thoughtfully, carefully; read everything. Your focus should be more on reading than writing. o One page of jotted notes is fine. After thirty minutes, you’re done! • For each section, include a typed response of two paragraphs, 400-500 words per section, in which you reflect on your experience of “slow reading” • Include each of these elements in your response: Identify the page by letting me know the Chapter and position. EX: In Chapter IX, I read the page near the beginning, where Dr. Leets explains distribution centers and credit cards to Julian West. Don’t just give a number because you and I may be working from different book editions. -Answer some of the following questions • o What was it like to devote so much time to reading this page so slowly? o What are your thoughts about the page you selected? o Did your interpretation of the information change over the thirty minutes? o What does “slow reading” bring to your understanding of the text? o What ideas or images from that page are still relevant today? Which ideas make no sense in the real 21st century? Be as specific as possible. o What elements of the text surprise you? Did your treasure hunt/slow read reveal anything unexpected? • Include at least three quoted passages from the book in your answer to this element. • Quote and comment on the article “The Power of Patience” at least once in your response. See attached word document with the instructions also.
