I think medical marijuana should be legalized for something’s in which patients should have prescription to obtain. I do not think it should just randomly be given to anyone. I agree with our text in that there is no other drug topic that has been debated as much as this one (Levinthal,2014 p. 167).However, in noting history Marijuana goes back thousands of years and there are medical and scientific information, studies and literature to support the medicinal efforts of this drug. I think it should only be used in terms of chronic illnesses and not basic medical treatment. I also think about herbal teas such as chamomile also does not have the same effects as marijuana, it is a nerve-soothing and sedative quality for some people yet it is not a drug or illegal (Douglas,2013) It shouldn’t be used for women who are pregnant as it could increase the risk of miscarriage (Douglas, 2013). However, some side effects are drowsiness, relaxation, and allergic reactions in children (Douglas, 2013). This alone reveals a medicinal tea to help a person relax or calm down, but, it is not regulated. Marijuana has been used extensively as a medical remedy for more than five thousand years. In the early 1900s, medical usage of marijuana began to decline with the advent of alternative drugs(Blaszczak-Boxe, 2014).

Injectable opiates and synthetic drugs such as aspirin and barbiturates began to replace marijuana as the physician’s drug of choice in the twentieth-century, as their results proved to be more consistent than using marijuana (Blaszczak-Boxe, 2014). The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 made cannabis so expensive to obtain that its usage as a medical remedy in the U.S. came to a halt (Blaszczak-Boxe, 2014). Although now illegal in the U.S., marijuana continues to be used for both medical and recreational purposes by many Americans. There are a variety of opinions both for and against the re-legalization of marijuana today. Perhaps the most controversial aspect of the legalization debate is whether marijuana should be legalized for medical purposes. If we think about it for over thousands of year’s marijuana has been used as a way to treat a wide variety of ailments. In 1937, marijuana was legal in the U.S. for all purposes (Blaszczak-Boxe, 2014). It was in 1999, that the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine (IOM)concluded that there are some limited circumstances in which marijuana would be helpful to some. Marijuana is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known. No one has ever died from an overdose, and it has a wide variety of therapeutic applications, including:

• Relief from nausea and appetite loss;

• Reduction of intraocular (within the eye) pressure;

• Reduction of muscle spasms; and

• Relief from chronic pain.

Marijuana is frequently beneficial in the treatment of Aids, Hepatitis C, Glaucoma, Cancer,
