A. Critical Analysis Paper: (20%)
● You will critically analyze an empirically based peer-reviewed research article on an intervention
that social workers use.
● Your analysis should address the following points in 10 pages:
1. What was the goal of the intervention?
a) What type of client change is expected? Changes in attitude? Change in
behavior? Acquire new knowledge or skill? Obtain access to a needed resource?
b) What client populations or situations would this intervention be useful for?
Which ones would it not be useful for?
c) Can it be used across client’s cultural or ethnic background and religious values
and beliefs? Can it be adapted for use with clients of various backgrounds?
2. What techniques or methods are utilized in this intervention?
a) To what practice modalities does this intervention apply? Ex. Individual, group,
family, community, policy?
b) How and why does change occur?
c) what is the role of the social worker? An advisor? Teacher? Counselor? Broker
of services? Case manager? Administrator? Planner? Researcher? Advocate?
d) What is the primary medium of communication? Verbal exchanges? Writing?
Reading? Expression through art or games? Formal or official communication?
Spontaneous and informal exchanges?
3. What were the outcomes of the intervention in the particular application study you
reviewed?
a) What is the validity of these findings relative to the results of the research?
b) What are some of the limitations of this intervention?
c) How might the research finding influence your own social work practice?
