In the Final Project for this course, you will revisit your potential DSW capstone or PhD dissertation topic through the lens of three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Each goal will have a distinct context—social, economic, and environmental—to help guide the development of your ongoing research by challenging you to consider the interdisciplinary implications of your work. For this Assignment, you start to familiarize yourself with public policy related to the research topic and SDG you shared in Week 1. You also consider how exposure to policy and policy analysis can add new context to help guide your ongoing research for your DSW capstone or PhD dissertation. To Prepare:
Look ahead to Week 10 and review the Final Project Assignment information. Revisit your Week 1 Assignment and pay particular attention to how you presented your research topic and the SDG you selected. You will use both again for this Assignment. If you would like to revise your topic or select a different SDG, you can do so now. If you change your SDG selection, please make sure that the SDG you select is from either an economic or environmental context (not from a social context because you are likely familiar with this context already). Select one public policy that relates to both your topic and the SDG you selected. The connections do not have to be obvious—instead, consider how the ripples of the policy, or indirect impacts, might have meaning for your topic area and selected SDG. Select at least three sources to support your analysis of the relationship between your research topic, SDG, and policy. Your selections can be from your Learning Resources throughout the course.
By Day 7
Submit a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following: Indicate whether you have revised your proposed research topic or changed your SDG selection. If your topic and SDG are the same, briefly restate both in 1–2 sentences for each.
If you have changed your topic or SDG, describe your new topic or SDG, and explain your changes in 3–5 sentences per change. Provide an overview of the policy you selected, including: Problem definition Goals Strategies/instruments to achieve goals. Explain how the policy impacts your research topic and associated SDG. In your explanation, address the following: What are the overt, or direct, impacts of the policy on the SDG? What are the covert, or indirect, impacts of the policy on the SDG? How does the policy relate to your research topic? How does the policy challenge you to think differently about your research topic? What is missing from the policy? For example, is the problem definition appropriate in scope? Or do the current strategies not sufficiently address the problem and/or goals?.
