thesis statement

Having a great or strong thesis statement to claim is essential as it provides a written “center” to the paper or piece of writing. Writing a good thesis can also intrigue the readers and instill a desire to read more in them. Different types of papers require different elements in the thesis statement.

In this article, we will discuss the elements of a good thesis statement and how to write a strong thesis statement that intrigues your readers.

What is a thesis statement?

A thesis statement is a sentence or two that conveys the purpose and topic of any piece of writing or research paper. There are different types of thesis statements based on the audience. For example, an argumentative essay thesis is different from an analytical one. However, the main elements, which are to convey the purpose and the topic are in both types of essays.

A thesis is often the last sentence of the introductory paragraph and intrigues the reader’s desire to continue reading.

Elements of a good thesis statement

A good thesis statement has various elements. These elements help to create curiosity in the readers and establish a desire in them to continue reading the paper. Here are some of the elements of a good or strong thesis statement.

Specific to the topic

A good thesis statement is specific to the topic of writing. A thesis statement that clearly identifies the topic being discussed helps the readers to not only know the topic but also keep focused and engaged with it.

For instance, if you are writing a research paper about government economic interventions during the Covid-19 pandemic recession, keep your thesis statement specific to this topic.

For example:  “The governments of different countries played a significant role in the rebound of the state and global economy because they intervened using different packages.”

Expresses interest

A good thesis statement expresses interest in the entire paper. The manner in which you express the purpose or the main point in the thesis statement helps to create curiosity in the readers and establish a desire to read more.

For example: “By the year 2030, we will have a hefty price to pay for climate change.”

Arguable opinion

If you are writing an argumentative essay, you must write a strong thesis statement. In an argumentative thesis statement, you will make a claim or opinion that allows other readers to argue for or against it. If the arguable opinion sparks emotions in the readers, they will have an intense desire to continue reading.

For example: “Junk food should be banned because they consistently cause more health problems.”

Reason for opinion

A good or strong thesis statement has a reason for your stance or opinion. This reason for opinion helps the readers to argue for or against your opinion.

For example: “Rehabilitation programs should be funded because they help reduce violence within prisons.”

How to write a thesis statement

Follow these four steps to come up with a good thesis statement:

1.     Determine the type of paper you are writing

Every paper needs a different approach and, thus, has a specific way of writing a thesis statement. There are three common types of thesis statements based on the different types of papers. These common types are argumentative, analytical, and expository.

  • Argumentative: an argumentative type of thesis statement that makes a claim or poses an opinion towards a given topic. It is used when writing argumentative essays and may include the topic, the writer’s opinion, and the reason for the opinion.
  • Analytical: an analytical thesis statement is written when analyzing a given issue. The thesis statement may include your topic and what you are analyzing. It may also contain your opinion based on the results of the analyses or what you expect.
  • Expository: an expository thesis statement is used in expository papers and explains a given topic. It mainly contains the selected topic and its main components.

2.     Choose your claim, topic or issue

Once you determine the type of paper you are writing, the next thing is to choose a claim, topic, or issue. As stated earlier, claims are for argumentative papers, topics are for expository papers, and issues are for analytical essays.

The selected topic should be as narrow as possible, as this helps create a strong thesis statement.

For example: “If your topic is the Covid-19 pandemic, you should narrow it down as much as possible to increase specificity. You can focus on How Covid-19 affected nurses or how Covid-19 caused a global recession or governmental efforts to save the economy during the Covid-19 pandemic.”

3.     Formulate an opinion

Your claim should be opinion-based to allow the readers to support or dispute it. For example, if your prompt is about the Covid-19 pandemic and your selected topic is How Covid-19 affected nurses, you may formulate an opinion that you believe that Covid-19 helped nurses get more employment opportunities because the demand for caregiving soared in all parts of the world.

Such an opinion may allow readers to argue for or against it.

4.     Write your thesis statement

The last thing would be to write a thesis statement. A good and strong thesis statement mentions the topic you are writing about. Besides mentioning the topic, it should include other essential elements. However, these elements are highly determined by the type of paper you are working on. If it s an argumentative essay, the other element besides stating the topic would be your claim.
