My thoughts on this topic: I am leaning towards a mandatory nurse-to-patient ratio over a non-mandatory nurse-to-patient staffing ratio. Health care provider shortages are projected to continue into the foreseeable future. An acute shortage of nurses working in hospital settings is even more prominent, which leads to a higher ratio of patients to available nurses. This increased nurse-to-patient ratio increases morbidity and mortality rates and decreases patient outcomes and patient satisfaction. It can further exacerbate nurse staff dissatisfaction and burnout turnover rate high. Many approaches have been studied for this multifaceted issue. Regulating the nurse-patient staffing ratio through laws might be one of the approaches. This is important as risks to patient safety have significant downstream effects on the impacted patients, the nursing staff, and the hospital administration.
